Brownie grew up in a small town in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and came to Maine for college. He led a Marine Corps platoon in Vietnam, practiced law with Pine Tree Legal Assistance, and was executive director of the Natural Resources Council of Maine for 27 years. Elected to the State Senate in 2016, Brownie wants to continue to work on improving educational opportunity, building a strong economy, and protecting our environment.
A clean and healthy environment is essential for a vibrant future. Brownie spent much of his career at the Natural Resources Council of Maine restoring our rivers, cleaning up air pollution, and advocating for programs like Land for Maine's Future. Last year, he was lead sponsor of a bill, enacted over the governor's veto, to update and strengthen Maine's mining laws. He brings environmental leadership to the legislature.
Brownie supports small businesses -- the foundation of our economy. He believes in investing to improve Maine's infrastructure, from roads and bridges to broadband. He strongly supports generating more clean, renewable energy -- especially solar -- and will work to advance skills training for our workers.
Brownie believes that everyone should have access to quality, affordable health care. He worked for MaineCare expansion during his first term, and serves on a Health Care Task Force charged with developing a new health care plan to cover all Maine residents. Last year, he was the driving force behind passage of a bill, enacted over the governor's veto, to restore our public health nursing service.
Brownie is committed to educational excellence at all levels, from pre-K through our community college and university systems. He wants to see our young people fully prepared for 21st century job opportunities. He supports education and job training programs to help people displaced from the workforce to regain skills and and return as productive participants.
Prevention, effective treatment, and law enforcement are essential tools. We need to:
Support community based substance abuse prevention programs;
Increase access to treatment, including Medication Assisted Treatment and expand MaineCare;
Support law enforcement efforts, including diversion to treatment;
Make Narcan more widely available.
Brownie has the character and skills needed to help restore civility to the legislative process. He is committed to building partnerships with Mainers from across the political spectrum. He values people and their ideas, and has a track record of developing bi-partisan solutions to Maine’s challenges. Now more than ever, we need elected officials who respect their colleagues at the State House, and who earn their respect in return.
We need to make our schools and communities safe from gun violence. Comprehensive background checks, a "red flag" law, and a ban on the sale of assault rifles and high capacity magazines are essential steps.
